At some point, the Castle Goch boys started a crazy game that seemed to be part obstacle course, part excuse for more drinking. They had to run up and down the hill, climb the dormitory walls, and then walk the whole way around them before downing a shot. Although each of the participants was taking it seriously, nobody else was, and it just led to more laughing. Very few of the boys made it the whole way round the walls without falling off, and it got to the stage where everyone was just chanting, “Fall, fall, fall, fall,” until Non thought some of the boys fell on purpose. But it was hilarious, and Non laughed until her stomach hurt and she couldn’t breathe. When it was Sam’s turn, he got down on his hands and knees to try to crawl along the top, but eventually he gave up and slid to the floor. There was a chorus of boos, and as he walked past Non, she called, “Pathetic attempt!”

He stopped and grinned. “It was hurting my knees,” he said.

“Well, can you do it walking, like normal people?” she said. “That wouldn’t hurt your knees.”

“It might hurt my body if I fall.”

“Excuses, excuses. We fought demons today and you can’t even walk along a wall, for no valid reason, in the dark.”

“Right.” He clambered back up again.

“Hey!” she called. “Come on, Sam!”

He started walking slowly, his arms out for balance.

“Come on, Sam,” a few other people called, echoing her.

“Come on, Sam!”

“So,” said Ellie. “Sam, eh?” Non couldn’t see her winking in the dark, but it felt like she probably did, or at least as though she gave a significant look. It silenced Non anyway, making her feel self-conscious again, even with the darkness hiding her. But then Meg walked past, heading toward the far end of the hillside with her arms round two Kintaborel Castle boys. Ellie and Non laughed again.
